First surprise this Sunday morning at Suzuka, where the qualifying session for the Japanese Grand Prix is indeed taking place after the passage of Typhoon Hagibis on Saturday. Daniel Ricciardo does not advance to Q2, the Australian failing by 99 thousandths against Daniil Kvyat's 15th time.

The qualifying session started brutally with two red flags. The first was caused by Robert Kubica. The Pole veered wide in the last corner, put a wheel in the grass, and lost control of his Williams which ended up in the wall outside.

A few minutes later, when the session had just started again, Kevin Magnussen spun at the same point and hit the tire wall in reverse. Despite the damage, the Dane managed not to stall and was able to return to his stand. The pilot Haas however, was unable to attack the time again. The others eliminated from Q1 are Sergio Pérez (Racing Point), which is also a surprise given the Mexican's times on Friday, and George Russell (Williams).
