The stable Williams surprised the little world of F1 by taking the first two places in the hierarchy at the end of the first free practice session of the 2009 season. Nico Rosberg set an impressive time of 1:26:687, a few tenths better than the pole achieved by Lewis Hamilton last year in 1'26"714 and despite all the changes that occurred during the winter.

Like his teammate Nakajima, Nico was fitted with Brisgestone's hardest tyres. Kimi Raikkonen was third – after being fastest for almost the entire session? in front of Rubens Barrichello's Brawn. Heikki Kovalaienen reached a promising 5th place at the wheel of his McLaren.

An MP4-24 equipped with the latest developments recently tested in Jerez and which Lewis Hamilton discovered. Hence his modest 16th time. Seventh time for Massa who had a little scare at turn 14, while Timo Glock, Adrian Sutil and Fernando Alonso completed the top ten. Note the hydraulic problems encountered by the Red Bull de Sebastian Vettel who brought up the rear.
