It's a nightmare start to the weekend for Jack Doohan. The Australian, who was making his debut at Suzuka at the wheel of a Formula 1 during Free Practice 2, saw his session cut short after only a few minutes on track.
After handing his car over to reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa in FP1, Doohan was finally able to take the wheel in FP2, but as he set off for a flying lap, he lost control of his car at the entrance to the first bend.
It's unclear at this point what caused his excursion. As soon as he tried to turn the wheel, his car suddenly skidded off the track and slid almost without slowing down, crashing violently into the safety barriers.
The images are particularly impressive: theAlpine No. 7 was completely destroyed and the driver, visibly dazed, took several minutes to get out of his car. He even seemed to have difficulty standing up on his own and was immediately taken care of by FIA doctors.
The accident, the circumstances of which remain unclear, led to a long red flag which considerably shortened the practice session.
