The drivers secure a time at the start of the session in Q1, for the most part on hard tires. But as is often the case in Q1, the last minutes prove decisive. Halfway through the race, Kimi Räikkönen is in the lead ahead of Jarno Trulli and Sebastian Vettel.

Lewis Hamilton then took the best time, in 1:33:290, using the softest tires. Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Bourdais, Mark Webber, Heikki Kovalainen and Timo Glock are the drivers not qualified for Q2 with five minutes remaining in the session.

Timo Glock and Heikki Kovalainen react. Glock is first ahead of Hamilton and Hovalainen. In 1:32:779, it was then Jarno Trulli's turn to take control of the session, when all the drivers set off for a final run, on "super soft" tires.

Two quick laps and Sebastian Vettel takes the lead. He is ahead of Trulli and Hamilton. Alonso narrowly qualifies by setting the thirteenth time.

Adrian Sutil, Sébastien Buemi, Giancarlo Fisichella, Mark Webber and Sébastien Bourdais bring up the rear and do not qualify for Q2. Big disappointment for Webber, stuck in traffic on his last fast lap.
