Kyle Larson was sanctioned following the Kentucky race. There Chip Ganassi Racing n°42 did not have a regulatory brake cooling system. The penalty is heavy for the driver who loses the benefit of his second place. He also lost 35 points and his crew chief, Chad Johnston, was fined $75.000 and suspended for the next three Monster Energy Series races.

Chip Ganassi Racing has announced that it accepts the decision and will not appeal. This penalty relegates Larson to second place in the championship, 34 points behind Martin Truex but remains 66 points behind Kyle Busch in 3e instead.
