Alex Bowman (Hendrick Motorsports) took his first pole in Nascar Sprint Cup by winning qualifying for the Can-Am 500 held at the Phoenix International Raceway (Arizona), the penultimate race of the season. Dale Earnhardt Jr's replacement preceded Kyla Larson (Chip Ganassi Racing), Chase Elliott (Hendrick Motorsports) and Joey Logano (Team Penske).
Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing) a placé la première Toyota Camry au 5e rang devant Kevin Harvick (Stewart-Haas Racing) and Austin Dillon (Richard Childress Racing).
Martin Truex Jr (Furniture Row Racing) was unable to qualify after his Toyota failed inspections. The driver of the No. 78 Camry will start from the back of the grid.
