The driver of the No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, and future Joe Gibbs Racing driver in 2015, Carl Edwards set the best time in the first free practice session at the Atlanta oval in Georgia. He is ahead of Ryan Newman (Richard Childress Racing – Chevrolet) and Marcos Ambrose (Richard Petty – Ford). For his 750th Cup start, Jeff Gordon (Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet) finished 14th behind his teammate Jimmie Johnson. For his return to competition, more than three weeks after the accident which cost the life of Kevin Ward Jr in Sprint Car, Tony Stewart (Stewart-Haas Racing – Chevrolet) takes 10th place.
