Greg Biffle (Roush Fenway Racing – Ford) set the best time in the first free practice session at the Talladega superspeedway (Alabama). The driver of the No. 16 Ford is the only one to have completed a lap at more than 200 mph (321,869 km/h) in 201,189 mph (323,478 km/h).
Danica Patrick (Stewart-Haas Racing – Chevrolet) se place dans la foulée de Biffle à 134 millièmes et précède Justin Allgaier (HScott Motorsports – Chevrolet). La première Toyota, celle de Clint Bowyer (Michael Waltrip Racing) émerge en quatrième position à 189 millièmes.
