Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick Motorsports) achieved his pole of the season on the Kentucky oval. With a time of 29, the five-time Sprint Cup champion set a new record on the circuit, beating Kyle Busch (Joe Gibbs Racing) by 700. Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing) took third place ahead of Kevin Harvick (Richard Childress Racing) and Ryan Newman (Stewart-Hass Racing) who completed the top five on the grid.
