Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato was one of the fastest drivers during the second day of Indy 500 testing. Unfortunately, the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver also lost control of his car in Turn 1, like Kyle Larson just a few minutes before him. If he hit harder than his counterpart from Arrow McLaren, the Japanese also emerged unharmed from his incident, although a little shaken.
Sato had just entered the first turn at over 381 km/h, the highest speed recorded during the day's first two hours of testing. He currently sits second overall behind Scott McLaughlin, with a lap averaging 374,2 km/h. This lap is also the fastest recorded without the aid of a slipstream, excellent news for Bobby Rahal's team. After a nightmarish 2023 at the Speedway, as Graham Rahal did not qualify for the race, Rahal decided to trust Sato, with whom he won the Indy 500 in 2020. Last year, the former driver of Formula 1 immediately improved the fortunes of the 1986 winner's team. After a promising first day on Wednesday, the Japanese driver seemed able to show a good burst of speed, but he has now destroyed his main car...
"I have some bruises and pain, of course, but I'm fine.", he explained to the circuit's official live streaming. "I just lost control, maybe I went into the corner a bit too fast! I have to go and check the data with the team, but it really hurts. My body is fine, I'll be back at 100% in a week, but I lost my main car. It's heartbreaking."
