Following his test crash this morning, Scott McLaughlin did not attempt qualifying, so it was clear that one of the three Penske cars would have to settle for the fourth row of the grid. However, the other two cars, those of Josef Newgarden and Will Power, failed pre-session inspection, and they and their teammate are now in tenth, eleventh, and twelfth positions on the grid.
This left only nine drivers competing for the six spots in the Fast 6. Contrary to expectations, it wasn't Ganassi's cars that were the fastest, but Felix Rosenqvist's Meyer Shank. It's worth remembering that the Swede's team is affiliated with Ganassi, but doesn't have exactly the same equipment. Pato O'Ward (Arrow) McLaren) set the second fastest time ahead of the weekend sensation, Robert Shwartzman (Prema Racing).
The Italian team is new to Speedway, as is its Russian driver. They had the luxury of beating out Chip Ganassi Racing duo Scott Dixon and Álex Palou! Between them, they have nine championship titles and one victory at the Indy 500… Two-time winner of the event, Takuma Sato (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing) also validates his ticket to the Fast 6, in a reserve car that he was forced to drive following his accident in April.
David Malukas (AJ Foyt Racing), Christian Lundgaard (Arrow McLaren), and Marcus Ericsson (Andretti) are therefore eliminated and will start on the third row of the grid. The four slowest drivers from yesterday will now start, hoping to secure one of the last three spots on the Indy 500 grid. The Fast 6 will take place immediately after.

Not bad for a rookie in Indianapolis, plus the discovery of the code earlier this year.
