Marco Andretti (Andretti), Marcus Armstrong (Meyer Shank Racing), and the two Dale Coyne Racing drivers, Rinus VeeKay and Jacob Abel, were in contention for this Bump Day, which would determine which of the four would not be able to compete in the Indianapolis 500. It quickly became clear that the final position would be decided between the two teammates, with Andretti and Armstrong qualifying comfortably at an average speed of over 229 mph (368,5 km/h).
After his first attempt, VeeKay was ahead of Abel, which meant the young American rookie had to try again if he wanted to qualify. To everyone's surprise, however, it was VeeKay who was the first to fire, abandoning his time for another attempt. The Dutchman's gamble almost backfired, as he went slower than Abel's first run. The rules specify that any eliminated car has its time canceled, so VeeKay provisionally qualified in last place.
Jacob Abel was left with one last run, which wasn't fast enough. Like last year, this is one of the two Dale Coyne Racing cars that won't be taking part in the Indianapolis 500. Now it's time for the Fast 6, which will decide pole position for the Indy 500.
