Ryan Briscoe, who replaces James Hinchcliffe, still convalescing after his accident in Indianapolis, in the seat of the Dallara DW12 – Honda n°5 of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, set the best time in the first free practice session on the Californian oval of Fontana in 33″110 (349,953 km/h).
Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport – Honda) climbs into second position, 20 thousandths behind Briscoe, and precedes the Frenchman simon pagenaud (Team Penske – Chevrolet). Tristan Vautier (Dale Coyne Racing – Honda) took 17th place while Sébastien Bourdais (KV Racing – Chevrolet) finished 22nd.
