Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport) set the best time in the first practice session at Sonoma Raceway (California) with a lap completed in 1'17"715. The last winner of the Indianapolis 500 is a tenth ahead of reigning champion Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing), while Tony Kanaan (Chip Ganassi Racing) takes third place four tenths behind. Helio Castroneves (Team Penske) and Championship leader Will Power (Team Penske) complete the top five, more than half a second behind. Sebastian Bourdais (KVSH Racing) took ninth place by eight tenths but simon pagenaud (SPM) is further behind with the 16th time more than a second behind.
