Takuma Sato (AJ Foyt Racing) will start on pole for the first race of the Houston Grand Prix after completing a lap in 1'00"4535. Will Power (Team Penske) will start alongside him on the front row after setting the best time in the first group. Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) took third place while Sébastien Bourdais (Dragon Racing) completes the second row ahead of his compatriot simon pagenaud (Schmidt Motorsports). Luca Filippi (Barracuda Racing) put in a great performance, taking eighth place on the grid. Conversely, the leader of the Championship Helio Castroneves (Team Penske) will only start from the back of the grid after being trapped in the session by a race interruption caused by Tristan Vautier (Schmidt Motorsports). The Frenchman was unable to set a time following an exit from the track.
