Started in pole position for the Indianapolis 500, Helio Castroneves spent most of the race behind. However, he took the lead of the field and was ahead of Ryan Briscoe and Dan Wheldon with 33 laps remaining. Frenchman Nelson Philippe retired on the 130th lap.
