Will Power (Team Penske) set the best time in the first and only free practice session for the Detroit doubleheader, in 1'17"27.
The Australian was ahead of Sébastien by less than 2/10ths Bourdais, comfortable on urban since his arrival at AJ Foyt Racing.
As constant as ever, Pato O' Ward (McLaren SP) set the 3rd time, ahead of Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi).
In the bumpy streets of Detroit, the three rookies made mistakes. First of all, Jimmie Johnson (Chip Ganassi) and Scott McLaughlin at the start of the session, before Romain Grosjean went head to tail in turn 3. No damage to the car, even if the rear wing of the No. 51 brushed the wall of tires.
