Yesterday the first free practice session for the Indianapolis 500 took place in Indianapolis. At the end of a day interrupted by rain, it was Ed Carpenter who set the best time of this first day. The Sarah Fisher Racing resident completed his fastest lap at an average speed of 224,786 mph (361.76 km/h).

Ed Carpenter is ahead of former winner of the American classic Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) and JR Hillebrand (Panther Racing). Defending champion Dario Franchitti (Chip Ganassi Racing) is fourth ahead of Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport) and Ryan Briscoe (Penske racing).
