The German driver was honored with the Rookie of the Year title, awarded since 1952. Unlike the championship Rookie of the Year title, which goes to the rookie driver who scores the most points during the season, the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year is selected by a panel of specialists who consider not only raw performance, but also media relations and positive impact on the race. Finishing in the top 10, Mick Schumacher he finally finished eighteenth, after brushing the wall at turn 1 with four laps to go.

The driver of the No. 47 Dallara-Honda was competing against Caio Collet (AJ Foyt Racing), who led nine laps before his crash with eight laps to go, Dennis Hauger (Dale Coyne Racing), and Jacob Abel (Abel Motorsports). Speaking to Racer.com, Schumacher expressed his satisfaction at finishing his first race and was impressed by the race itself and the atmosphere, something he had struggled to imagine during practice without spectators.

“I understand better what people mean now. When they say it’s the greatest spectacle in motorsport, it really is, and it’s truly insane. It was incredible to be a part of it, and I was absolutely blown away by the race. We had a bit of bad luck with the cautions; without them, I probably could have finished in the top 10. We wanted to finish the race in one piece, we did, and of course, I hit the wall at the end of the race, but there aren’t many people who can boast about hitting the wall and finishing the Indy 500!”

It's a shame because with a good strategy he had rejoined the leading group, and all the safety car periods made it a bit confusing. In any case, he had a good race; he's making slow but steady progress despite his injury, and he finished ahead of his usual teammates, excluding the stand-in driver Sato.
