French simon pagenaud (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports) wins the first edition of the Indianapolis Grand Prix contested on the Infield of the legendary American oval. The driver of the #12 Honda-powered DW77 took advantage of excellent fuel management and Oriol Servia's last stop to take the lead again with four laps to go. He is ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti), Helio Castroneves (Penske), Sébastien Bourdais (KV Racing) and Charlie Kimball (Ganassi) who completes the top 5.

The race was marked by the crash at the start between Mikhail Aleshin (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports) and the pole sitter who had stalled Sebastian Saavedra (KV Racing). Franck Montagny, who was riding an Andretti DW12, was forced to retire after being hit by Martin Plowman.
