The start of the session heralded disruptions as Maximilian Günther (Arden) stopped on the track after only five minutes of practice and caused a first red flag before the other drivers had time to make a reference.

Despite several yellow flags for blocking and poor braking, the British next generation stood out at the end of the session with George Russell (ART GP), Lando Norris (Pug) and Alexander albon (DAMS) successively improve the best time before an error Nicholas latifi (DAMS) which brings the session to a premature end.

Alex Albon therefore won his first pole in Formula 2 ahead of Lando Norris and George Russell. Luca Ghiotto (Campos), although leading the first part of qualifying, cannot do better than 4e in front of a surprising Santino Ferrucci (Trident).

Sergio Sette Câmara (Carlin) settles for a 6e position ahead of rookies Jack Aitken (ART GP) and Arjun Maini (Trident). Nyck de Vries (Prema) cannot do better than 9e and Ralph Boschung (MP Motorsport) completes the top 10. Artem Markelov (Russian Time) once again misses the mark and qualifies 18e.
