Second in qualifying this Saturday, Scott McLaughlin was one of the favorites to succeed him, having secured pole position for the Indy 500 last year. The New Zealand driver now has very little chance of participating in the Fast 12, which will start at 22:05 p.m. French time, after suffering a serious accident during the current practice session, in which he had just set the fastest time.

The driver of the No. 3 Team Penske Dallara-Chevrolet lost control in Turn 2 before hitting the wall and going airborne. As he landed, the right-rear wheel rim of his car dug a hole in the asphalt, testifying to the violence of the impact. The Christchurch native is fine, but one of the fastest cars this May in Indianapolis is now destroyed.
" I'm doing well ", he reassured the FOX microphone. “I’m just really sorry for the whole team here, but also everyone who helped build this fantastic car at the factory. I felt the car start to slide and I should have slowed down, but we’re also trying to understand how the car handles over the four laps. I’m extremely sad. When the accident happened, I just hung on and hoped I wouldn’t end up in the fence. I’m grateful to IndyCar for the safety of these cars and this track. You just have to keep going, that’s what it is. It’s really unfortunate for the team, we had a great car, and I just destroyed it. It’s hard to take. I would have preferred it to happen in a session that counts rather than in practice, but it’s the decisions you make at those speeds that count. I chose to stay on track, so it’s my fault.”
