This is likely to be an emotional moment for the McRae family, especially for Jimmy and Hollie. Grandfather and granddaughter will be racing together in the McRae Rally Challenge (September 20-21). For the late Colin's daughter, this is a first in motorsport. She had never considered following in her father's footsteps until now, but his DNA has caught up with her.
“I think on some subconscious level, there was a part of me that avoided going to gatherings for a long time, because after losing my dad, we didn’t go to many events, so it felt quite foreign,” Hollie McRae tells DirtFish.
Colin McRae's daughter has developed an interest in rally in recent years, to the point of participating in an event herself starting in September. Hollie will team up with her grandfather Jimmy: he will be driving, and she will be co-pilot.
"What she has accomplished over the past two years is simply incredible," said Jimmy McRae, still speaking to our colleagues at DirtFish. "She knows more about this sport than I do, and I've been in it for... a few years. It's obviously in her blood."
Colin isn't the only driver in the McRae family: his father Jimmy and brother Alister also raced, and the next generation is starting to follow in their footsteps. Max, Alister's son and Colin's nephew, is competing in Rally2 this year.
Colin McRae has won 25 races in his career. WRC, winning the world title in 1995 and finishing as world runner-up three times. He died suddenly at the age of 39.
