Mäkinen (Toyota) confirmed that Tänak had retired following a turbo problem.
Mikkelsen: “I didn't drive very well in the first SS of the morning. I felt like I was doing better in the following ones but the times were still not good. The others are a little far away now and it's easy to make a mistake here. I won't be able to take them again on a regular basis. »
Ogier: “It’s clearly preferable today with our position on the road. It remains difficult to make up for the time lost yesterday. 15s is both a lot and a little at the same time. We have achieved our objectives for the moment by being faster than those who were in front of us yesterday (Neuville). »
Pierre Budar (director of Citroën Racing): “The gaps are tight but Seb has experience and he has found himself in this type of situation on numerous occasions. I know he will be able to handle this. »
Neuville: “I'm more relaxed now because there are fewer issues after all the problems encountered yesterday. Loeb drives very well. To be able to fight against Dani (Sord) who is always good here, it's pretty remarkable. »
Sébastien Loeb (Citroën) took control of the Rally of Mexico after taking the scratch in the 31km of Guanajuatito (SS11), the first route of the second stage, where he beat his direct rival Dani Sordo (Hyundai) of about twelve seconds. The nine-time WRC champion retains the lead of the event at midday even if the Spaniard came back to less than three seconds of the Alsatian after the passage of El Brinco (SS13).
The fight is also in full swing for third place. Sébastien Ogier (M-Sport) came back level with Kris Meeke (Citroën) despite convincing performances from the Northern Irishman. The two men are less than 16 seconds from the lead of the race and still remain candidates for victory. They also benefited from the retirement of Ott Tänak (Toyota) who was in third place before encountering engine problems in the first one-day special.
The ranking is longer from the fifth place occupied by Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai) who is now almost 50 seconds behind his direct opponents while he followed Sébastien Ogier by a few tenths on the evening of the first stage. The Norwegian is ahead of his teammate Thierry Neuville who lost further time by encountering mechanical problems after crossing a ford.
Pontus Tidemand (Skoda) is alone at the head of WRC 2 with around ten minutes ahead of his pursuers. The Swede occupies seventh place in the general classification ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala (Toyota).
The second passage of the second stage of the Rally Mexico will be contested from 21:21 p.m. Paris time and will be followed live with our live text.
The provisional classification after SS13:
Suninen was the slowest among the WRCs by setting the 9th fastest time, ten seconds behind Ogier.

The five-time world champion completed the course in 5'29"2, half a second ahead of Dani Sordo (Hyundai). The Citroën drivers were further behind on this course, Kris Meeke and Sébastien Loeb failing more than three seconds from the benchmark. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) finished 4”6 behind.
Sébastien Loeb retains the lead of the Rally Mexico but he sees Dani Sordo come back to less than three seconds as he joins the service. Kris Meeke is a dozen seconds behind the Spaniard and is now tied with Sébastien Ogier. Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai) remains fifth ahead of his teammate Thierry Neuville.
Lappi sets the 7th time, 5” from the provisional scratch.
Sordo ranks only half a second behind Ogier and thus takes more than 3 seconds from Loeb. The Hyundai driver is 2″9 behind the leader.
Sordo is on Ogier's pace in the 2nd split with 1″8 ahead of Loeb.
Loeb sets the 3rd provisional time, 3″6 behind Ogier. The Alsatian maintains a 15”5 lead over his teammate Meeke and Ogier. “It’s a nice surprise to be so well placed. But it's difficult to keep the lead, I lost some during the last two SS. »
Loeb is 1″8 behind Ogier in the 2nd split.
Meeke almost made another mistake towards the finish, narrowly catching himself against an embankment. The Citroën driver drops 3″5 to Ogier who finds himself tied in the general standings! “I made a few mistakes. I had difficulty braking. We'll see what happens this afternoon. »
Meeke has just passed the corner where he went off the road last year during the Power Stage. The Northern Irishman still won the rally after finding his way.
Meeke is just over a second behind Ogier in the 2nd split.
Ogier took the best time with a 3″1 lead over Latvala. “I had a problem on the starting line. I hope to enjoy it more this afternoon. » The M-Sport driver remains in the fight for the podium.
