Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) therefore takes pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix thanks to a best lap completed in 1'41″498. Lews Hamilton (Mercedes) will start on the front row, while Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) and Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) will share the second row.
Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari), who came very close to pole, follow ahead of Esteban Ocon (Force India), Sergio Pérez (Force India), Nico Hülkenberg (Renault) who will have to observe five penalty places, and Carlos Sainz (Renault).
Too bad for Kimi Räikkönen who goes wide at the exit of the last corner and who will miss pole against Vettel! The Finn was more than two tenths ahead of his teammate.
Bottas and Hamilton do not improve against Vettel, but Räikkönen is ahead of his Scuderia Ferrari teammate!
Hamilton is faster than Vettel in the first sector by 9 thousandths.
The pilots leave for their second attempt. Both Mercedes and Esteban Ocon (Force India) are in action.
Before the second attempts, Vettel is on provisional pole with three tenths ahead of Hamilton and four tenths over Bottas.
Ricciardo admits to having hit the wall and wants a set of new tires for his next attempt. For his part, Räikkönen, sixth in provisional time, passed very close to the correctional at the exit of the last turn, almost touching the outside wall.
1'42″017 for Verstappen on his first pass. Ricciardo fails by four tenths. Bottas and Hamilton (Mercedes) improved but finally Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) set a lap in 1'41″498.
Romain Grosjean admits that the hydraulic system “broke” after putting into reverse to escape the loophole where the Frenchman got stuck in Q1. “The car seemed good on both corners” he comments on Canal +
Bottas leaves before Hamilton in the Mercedes clan.

The Williams of Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin, Fernando Alonso (McLaren), Charles Leclerc (Sauber) and Kevin Magnussen (Haas) are eliminated from access to Q3.
1'42″510 for Räikkönen who improves. The two Red Bulls of Ricciardo and Verstappen do not improve, just like Vettel and the Mercedes. Only the Finn will have to use the ultra-soft tires tomorrow at the start, against the super-soft tires for his rivals.
Sixth time for Sergio Pérez (Force India). Carlos Sainz (Renault) climbs to seventh place, while Hülkenberg takes provisional sixth place.
All the drivers finally came out on ultra-soft tires.
Provisional seventh time for Stroll
Pérez, Sainz, Magnussen, Räikkönen and Stroll are provisionally eliminated.
