Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), in 1'42″553, was the strongest in the qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix. The Briton thus equals Michael Schumacher's record in the exercise, with 68 poles.

Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari), at the cost of a last successful attempt, climbs to the front row by more than two tenths. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) and Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari) will start on the second row in front of Max Verstappen, last driver under second and Daniel Ricciardo.

Nico Hülkenberg (Renault) qualified seventh ahead of Sergio Pérez and Esteban Ocon (Force India). Jolyon Palmer (Renault) was unable to set a time after a gearbox oil pressure problem.

Kimi Räikkönen signs the first time which is beaten by 363 thousandths by Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), in 1'42″907. Vettel (Ferrari) fails more than half a second behind Hamilton, while Bottas (Mercedes) concedes 451 thousandths.

In 1'42″927, a new track record, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) dominated the second part of qualifying in Belgium. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) climbs into second position at 322 thousandths ahead of Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari), Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) and Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull).

Jolyon Palmer (Renault), Sergio Pérez (Force India), Nico Hülkenberg (Renault) and Esteban Ocon (Force India) also advance to Q3. Fernando Alonso (McLaren) failed in 11th position, after the Woking team tried to give the Spaniard the benefit of Stoffel Vandoorne's aspiration. The double world champion also did not hide his anger on his radio, indicating that he had no power.

Also eliminated after Q2, the two Haas of Grosjean and Magnussen, Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) and Stoffel Vandoorne.
