Lewis Hamilton takes his first pole in Mexico by winning qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix. Mercedes has locked the front row with Nico Rosberg ahead of the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo. Nico Hülkenberg (Force India) is in fifth place ahead of the Ferraris of Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel. The Williams of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa precede the Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz Jr.
Hamilton took pole while Rosberg snatched 2nd place against the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Ricciardo. Hülkenberg is 5th ahead of Räikkönen, Vettel, Bottas, Massa and Sainz Jr.
Qualifying ends and the drivers arrive…
The drivers seem less efficient in this second flying lap...
Massa is the last driver to wait in the pits. The other drivers do their warm-up lap.
Rosberg will have to fight to win the 1st row against the Red Bulls. Scuderia Ferrari seems to be in more difficulty in Q3.
Hamilton is provisionally on pole with a time of 1’18”704. The Briton is ahead of the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Ricciardo. Rosberg is only in 4th place, more than half a second behind his teammate. Hülkenberg is 5th ahead of Räikkönen, Bottas, Vettel, Massa and Sainz Jr.
The Red Bulls are temporarily in the lead with Verstappen ahead of Ricciardo, but the Mercedes are arriving...
The ten drivers took to the track. Flying laps will begin soon.
Q3 begins for 12 minutes. Verstappen, Vettel and Ricciardo are the only drivers not to take to the track directly. Super soft tires are essential.
Fernando Alonso (McLaren) is the first to be eliminated from Q2 of the Mexican Grand Prix, falling just one tenth behind Carlos Sainz Jr (Toro Rosso). The Asturian is ahead of Sergio Pérez (Force India) who missed his last flying lap after trying to qualify on soft tires at the start of the session. Jenson Button (McLaren) follows in 13th place ahead of Kevin Magnussen (Renault) and Pascal Wehrlein (Manor).
Max Verstappen (Red Bull) set the best time in Q2 with a lap completed in 1’18”972. The Dutchman was more than a tenth ahead of Lewis Hamilton, but the Mercedes qualified on soft tires in order to start with yellow sidewall tires.
Alonso is the first eliminated from Q2. The McLaren driver is ahead of Pérez, Button, Magnussen, Ericsson and Wehrlein.
The checkered flag is presented to the drivers.
Rosberg is the only driver in the top 5 still on track one minute from the end of Q2. The German is almost 8 tenths behind Verstappen even if the two drivers did not use the same tires.
Vettel asked his team if he was sure he would be in Q2. The Ferrari driver was absent for a pressing need…
Räikkönen, 6th, returned to the track with super soft tires. Has Ferrari changed its strategy?
