The Gresini team will have to do without Álex Márquez for the Italian and Hungarian Grands Prix. The Spanish rider, who suffered a serious injury during last weekend's Catalan Grand Prix, will continue his recovery after his impressive crash in Barcelona, his Gresini team announced on social media.
The Spaniard was involved in a violent crash after colliding with Pedro Acosta's KTM, which had suddenly slowed down due to a mechanical problem. Propelled off the track at very high speed, Márquez then crashed heavily in the run-off area of the Catalan circuit, very close to the concrete wall.
Taken to hospital after the accident, the Gresini driver suffered, among other things, a fracture of his right clavicle and a fracture of his C7 vertebra. He underwent successful surgery on his clavicle in Barcelona to stabilize the injury with the insertion of a plate.
Álex Márquez will therefore miss the races at Mugello in Italy and the Hungarian Grand Prix in order to prioritize a full recovery before his return to the track. No official return date has yet been announced regarding his resumption of competition. The next race will take place two weeks later in Brno (Czech Republic).
