Considered the logical favorite for the world championship title MotoGP Before the 2026 season even began, Marc Márquez was still struggling to live up to his potential. After two rounds, the Ducati rider was only fifth in the overall standings, 22 points behind leader Marco Bezzecchi. While he did manage to win the Sprint in Brazil, he was still far from being able to project the same ambitions in the main race.
In Thailand, a puncture robbed him of a strong result while battling for a top-five finish, and in Brazil, the series of right-hand corners clearly didn't make the Goiânia circuit Márquez's preferred spot to showcase his full potential. But in both cases, the Ducati rider was far from being able to challenge the Aprilia rider for the victory. The Grand Prix of the Americas, historically one of the events where the nine-time world champion has had the most success, could therefore be an interesting indicator of his true level of performance.
Austin, the kingdom of Marc Márquez
Since his arrival in MotoGP, Márquez has made the Circuit of the Americas his territory. It was on this track, inaugurated during his rookie season in 2013, that he secured his first-ever victory in the premier class. Between 2013 and 2021, he won seven of the eight races held there, missing out on victory only in 2019 after a crash at turn 12 while leading the first eight laps. The number 93 rider also boasts eight pole positions in Texas, the most recent of which dates back to 2025.
After this string of victories, his performances in Austin were more inconsistent, but his skill was still evident. Although he missed the 2023 Grand Prix of the Americas due to injury, he returned to Texas in 2024. He demonstrated his continued pace by securing second place in the Sprint and briefly leading the feature race before crashing. The Cervera native fared even better last year in the first event of the weekend, winning the Sprint. However, he crashed again in the Grand Prix the following day, in unusual conditions, when no one seemed able to stop him. He rejoined the race after the incident but ultimately withdrew.
A pebble in the shoe
In light of these figures, it's also important to remember the physical difficulties the Spaniard is currently experiencing. Marc Márquez continues to complain of lingering effects from his injury in Indonesia last year. On a circuit that demands so much from its riders, he could also be confronted with his limitations.
The COTA, where Marc Márquez never misses an opportunity to make his mark, could therefore provide some answers regarding the Spaniard's level of performance at the start of this season. By revealing the strengths and weaknesses of the Borgo Panigale rider, the third Grand Prix of the year will be an initial indicator of his status in the title race.
The same will be true on the other side of the curtain. While Marco Bezzecchi is enjoying a contrasting period, having secured four consecutive Grand Prix victories with Aprilia, Austin has never been kind to him. His best performance there remains a sixth-place finish, a result he achieved both in 2023 with VR46 and in 2025 with Aprilia.
