Bagnaia 'behaved like a loser' by missing out on the podium at Mugello

Bagnaia 'behaved like a loser' by missing out on the podium at Mugello

He dreamed of being on the top step of the podium, sharing his joy with the fans, but Pecco Bagnaia was content with a supporting role, overshadowed by his teammate's victory in the big drama of the tenth round of the championship. Yet, the Italian spent the start of the race giving the cue to Marc Márquez, without ever stammering or forgetting his lines.

The two Ducati riders were also in the running for the Oscar for Best Costume, with their suits and bikes adorned in brown and designs paying homage to the Renaissance. This duel of modern-day knights delivered on all its promises from the start, when Pecco Bagnaia slipped inside to take the lead and make it clear to his teammate that he wasn't going to let himself be walked over like in previous rounds.

But after a three-way battle with the Márquez brothers, the two-time world champion ultimately found himself behind when the musical chairs stopped, occupying the place he didn't want to return to. His dreams of victory – a fourth straight at Mugello – were dashed as the rear of Álex Márquez's Gresini (2nd) pulled away from him with each lap.

"For the first six laps, everything was fine and you could see it. Then the front tire failed and I started to behave like a loser," the Ducati rider asserts in comments reported by Paddock GP. I was going faster than Alex, but I couldn't get any closer. As usual since the beginning of the year, I get to within 3 or 4 tenths, but then the front tire doesn't hold up, it's the usual scenario. There's a lot of anger, I'm disappointed, because I know what I'm capable of, I know I can win races, but I'm not in a position to fight."

The title soars a little more

Pecco Bagnaia's season has so far been a long and difficult journey, undermined by a bike he neither likes nor understands. The Italian is struggling on the Ducati GP25, without really knowing what's causing the problem. Despite his regular troubles, Gigi Dall'Igna's team has yet to find a solution to improve the situation for its rider, who expects to experience "a nightmare" at Assen next weekend.

Winning for the second time this season at Mugello after Austin would have been an unexpected breath of fresh air in a long, difficult season where his title chances have almost already vanished. The Turin native is now 110 points behind Marc Márquez, and there is nothing to suggest a possible reversal of the balance of power in the coming weeks. In 2022, Bagnaia had closed a 91-point deficit on fabio quartararo to win his first title… Is the feat still possible?

"This is not the time to think about the World Championship. I have to find my speed first. I can't imagine winning a title with races like this, like I have been doing since the beginning of the season, hoping that others make a mistake. In the current situation, if nothing changes, it will be difficult." sweeps the Italian, decidedly defeatist after the umpteenth slap received on his land.

Oh, nothing displeases me, you know. It's just that I have a lot of fun reading the comments of pseudo-analysts who like to give their opinions on the web. I'm not for any particular rider. Obviously, I prefer some to others, but I wouldn't allow myself to expose my great ideas while I'm sitting in front of my television. Basically, I have nothing against you, but you're no one to say who deserves a handlebar in MotoGP. The proof is, you can send an email to Gigi and I'll put something to cut if he takes your opinion into account. No animosity, we will certainly never meet and it's simply a difference of opinion. I won't respond anymore so as not to end up with increasingly sterile comments. Have a good season

@PAT: I'm not saying he shouldn't be in MotoGP, just that he doesn't deserve to be in the saddle. An official rider on the best bike, he only has a 50% win ratio over the last 4 years, while he's been crushed this year by Marc Marquez and beaten by Alex Marquez. These are just the facts, and nothing else. The truth hurts, I know... I'm not disrespecting riders like you claim, and not even Bagnaia, who I obviously wouldn't be capable of doing even a thousandth of what he accomplishes on his bike. I'm just observing... No offense to some fans who would do better to learn to read statistics than the dictionary...

Yes, that's for sure. He's really here by chance. And his titles are just a coincidence. And last thing... you'd better look up the definition of "valiant" in the dictionary before writing anything. The least you can do is respect the pilots who put on a magnificent show.

Beaten in 2021 by Quartararo whose machine was no match for the Ducati, beaten again by Jorge Martin last year who was certainly riding the same bike but in a satellite team, beaten this year by Alex Marquez who has last year's machine, it is logical that he is eaten alive by Marc Marquez on an equal bike... Obviously it was easier when the Spaniard was on the Honda. Bagnaia does not deserve this handlebar, really. There are much more valiant riders on the grid...
