The Frenchman will have to make a long lap at the start of the race, after hitting Bastianini in the first corner of the Grand Prix. Starting sixth on the grid, Quarterly had emerged on the inside until he caught the KTM, which was in second position. Missing his braking point, the Nice driver then hooked the Italian, who was able to continue on his way.
Continue, of course, but not for long! As early as turn 9, Bastianini ended up on the ground alongside Johann Zarco (LCR Honda). For hitting the French rider, the Italian has been given two long lapses to complete during this Sunday's Grand Prix, which will have the effect of significantly dropping him down the standings, on a circuit where overtaking is particularly difficult. From the website of MotoGP, number 23 returned to his misadventures of Saturday.

“I definitely didn't expect this! I got off to a really good start, it's the first time I've managed to do that on the KTM. We worked hard all weekend to improve this point, and it worked. I was second, but Fabio Quartararo made a mistake and hit not only my bike, but also my back! So I lost a lot of positions.”
Having set off with a damaged bike, Bastianini logically wanted to take advantage of a traditionally lively first lap in MotoGP to regain some positions. Unfortunately, he realized one corner before his crash that his bike was definitely not in a condition to continue without incident...
"I tried to get back on track, but at Turn 8 I could see that the bike was damaged, and at the next corner it was simply impossible to brake. I took Zarco with me and I'm really sorry for him, because there was nothing else I could do. We talked to the race director, and we'll have the information later this evening. We've pointed out what happened in the data, we'll pass it on to them and it's up to them to make a decision."
A decision which did not go in the direction of the former Ducati rider, who was heavily penalized for "irresponsible riding."
