Catalan GP: Penalties rain down after the race, Joan Mir loses his podium finish

Several riders, including Joan Mir, were penalized for exceeding tire pressure limits after the Catalan GP, ​​while Johann Zarco will receive a penalty for his collision at turn 1 once he has recovered.

The Catalan Grand Prix delivered its share of drama after the race, with several penalties and technical checks altering the final standings. The first issue concerned tire pressure: after the race, several drivers were penalized for running with lower pressure than that required by Michelin, the official tire supplier for the series.

Due to penalties introduced at the start of last season, this infraction resulted in a 16-second penalty for each rider. The list includes riders who scored points, such as Pramac Yamaha riders Jack Miller (14th) and Toprak Razgatlıoğlu (15th). Álex Rins (9th) is also affected, as is Raúl Fernández, who finished outside the top 15 after crashing on the second restart.

But the biggest loser of the day was none other than Joan Mir. While he secured second place in the Catalan Grand Prix, his first podium finish since Malaysia 2025, the Spaniard was penalized by the stewards. He dropped to 13th place in the overall standings, ahead of Álex Rins and Jack Miller, while the other three riders mentioned were disqualified.

However, these penalties allowed Augusto Fernandez, a Yamaha wildcard entry this weekend, to break into the top 15 and finish the weekend in 12th place. Meanwhile, Pecco Bagnaia benefited from Joan Mir's penalty to secure a podium finish, ending the Ducati factory team's run of 10 races without a podium.

Johann Zarco penalized for his next Grand Prix

The Italian had a narrow escape, as his bike also attracted attention, but his case was ultimately dismissed. After the race, the front tire pressure of his Ducati GP26 was investigated, but post-race checks showed that everything was in order at the start. The pressure drop observed during the race was attributed to a leak at the rim, without any regulatory infraction. Bagnaia is therefore cleared.

Johann Zarco, for his part, did not escape the consequences of his mistake at the first corner. Involved in contact and a crash with Luca Marini and Francesco Bagnaia during the first restart of the Catalan Grand Prix, the Frenchman will be penalized at his next race. His case has, however, been deferred until later, to allow him time to explain himself to the stewards.
