Jorge Martín had a disastrous Saturday at home, during the Catalan Grand Prix. MotoGPThe Aprilia rider crashed during the Sprint race, his fourth fall of the weekend on the tricky, low-grip Barcelona circuit. Another zero points – his second of the season after the Jerez GP Sprint where he suffered a brake problem – fortunately without any physical consequences.
The championship result isn't bad for #89, who maintains second place, two points behind Marco Bezzecchi. The Italian also struggled on his RS-GP, finishing ninth with only one point on Saturday.
"It's a complicated weekend""The Spaniard admitted it to the media." "It's just a few minor injuries for me, nothing that prevents me from piloting properly, so it's fine." Because Jorge Martín is particularly keen to acknowledge the work of his team during a weekend in which he damaged motorcycles during every session: "They didn't even take a lunch break, I'm really proud of them."
Despite this latest incident, the 2024 world champion remains reassuring about his performance level. “Honestly, I felt really good on the bike, much better than yesterday. We followed our method, we understood what had happened, and today I felt very good. It’s a very tricky track, it’s very difficult to find the limit. And when you find it… you crash.”
Jorge Martín nervous at home
Without making excuses, Martín identifies pilot error in this latest accident: "Perhaps I kept too much front brake on with the wind behind me." Behind every crash, there's human error. It's part of the process of understanding the bike. The important thing is to understand so you don't repeat the same mistake and can move forward. I'm very fast in turn 10, maybe too fast, so I need to brake a little earlier.
Jorge Martín, always open-minded when it comes to discussing the mental aspect of competition, also made a surprising confession to the press, admitting he wasn't in his element in Spain: I don't really like running here. It's too noisy, too crowded. While he appreciates the public's support, he acknowledges that this atmosphere can also generate stress. Of course, the team helps me stay focused and be where I want to be, but I prefer racing elsewhere and being more relaxed than here.
And to continue: « In Italy, for Marco [Bezzecchi], I think it's the same.. For me, it's just Spain, but we have four races in the country. Jerez was good, but from the Monday of a race in Spain, I start to feel more nervous, like there's something inside me that isn't working.
He still has one race to compete in this weekend in Catalonia, and despite the crashes, Jorge Martín believes the potential is definitely there. So all is not lost. “In the Sprint, I think I could have been in contention for the podium, maybe even the win. Tomorrow is anyone's guess. The goal is to enjoy myself and finish the race scoring some good points.”he concluded on the sidelines of the Grand Prix main race.
