The French Grand Prix sprint was drawing to a close when everything changed for Marc Márquez. With two laps to go, while running in seventh place in an already difficult race, the Spaniard lost control of his Ducati Desmosedici GP26 before crashing heavily. Landing on his right foot, the reigning world champion left the track limping, raising fears of a serious injury.

The tests carried out in the aftermath confirmed these doubts. The nine-time world champion of MotoGP He is suffering from a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. This injury will force him to miss the French Grand Prix this Sunday, as well as the Catalan Grand Prix, which he was supposed to compete in at home next week (May 17). "Yes, it was a bad fall. I was really in bad shape, very bad shape.""I'm not happy," Marc Márquez told the media in Le Mans after the race.

In addition to this injury, Marc Márquez had already planned an operation following the next round of the season, to try to recover from other physical after-effects.

"An operation was already scheduled after Catalonia, for the right shoulder, he reveals. After Jerez, I realized something was wrong. I went to see the doctors and told them, “Something’s going on.” At home, I feel fine. I’m riding motocross, everything’s fine. But as soon as I get here, on a MotoGP bike, my right arm is completely wrecked.”

Two operations in one for Marc Márquez

After a thorough analysis, doctors reportedly determined the cause. Marc Márquez is said to have fully recovered from his crash at the 2025 Indonesian Grand Prix, which sidelined him for the rest of the season. However, the incident apparently led to further complications. A screw was broken and another was bent in his arm. "The one that was broken had a slightly different position and, as a result, in its position on the MotoGP bike, this screw was touching the radial nerve."Marc Márquez further explains in Le Mans.

He then went on to explain, in particular, why he set the Bugatti circuit lap record in Q1 before going almost four tenths slower in Q2: "That's why, sometimes, I'm fast, but without knowing how or why. However, I'm not consistent and I've had some strange crashes. That's also why, this weekend, I was particularly cautious. But there you have it... my body doesn't cooperate with what I want to do."

Marc Márquez will therefore undergo this surgery at the same time as the surgery on his right foot and hopes to return to competition as soon as possible. He nevertheless offers a sadly realistic assessment of his season: “I wasn’t ready to fight for the championship. I knew it. I didn’t say anything because I don’t like to complain. As I showed today in Q1, I can be fast because I know how to ride this bike. But as we also saw today, I can make stupid mistakes without understanding why.”

Marc Márquez's next target is the Italian Grand Prix, scheduled for May 31st at the Mugello circuit. Until then, he plans to get plenty of rest to ensure he returns to competition in the best possible condition.
