Simply reading the weekend's statistics isn't enough to gauge the Italian rider's performance, riding an Aprilia RS-GP that is a very effective weapon on the Mandalika track in Indonesia. While Bezzecchi started from pole position, he lost several positions at the start, leaving Fermín Aldeguer's Ducati Gresini to take off. Bezzecchi first had to catch up with the rest of the pack before attacking the leader, notably after a great battle with Raúl Fernández's Aprilia Trackhouse.
"It was a fantastic race. Unfortunately, I don't know what happened at the start, but I lost a lot of time. Afterwards, I was extremely fast and confident. I saw that Fermín Aldeguer was very fast, and I didn't think I could catch him, but I didn't give up."
Once he had joined Aldeguer, Bezzecchi managed to find an opening on the final lap of the race, taking the Sprint victory and also moving up the championship lead over a completely drifting Pecco Bagnaia, who finished last. The two men are battling for third place in the world championship.
"It was fantastic, I'm destroyed but it was truly incredible. On the last lap I really gave it my all to attack him on the inside, it was a great battle. I also congratulate him and my whole team, I'm very happy and now we'll think about the second race on Sunday."
It remains to be seen whether Marco Bezzecchi can double his lead this Sunday from 9 a.m., during the Indonesian Grand Prix, on the Mandalika track.
