Michelin has announced changes to its front tire allocation for the 2026 season. MotoGPThese changes aim to reduce specifications without compromising performance, while adapting tire distribution to the actual needs of drivers and circuits.
Starting with the first Grand Prix, drivers will have two front tire specifications available, compared to three the previous season. Seven tires of each specification will be allocated, bringing the weekend's total to fourteen front tires (instead of fifteen in 2025). This new balance, decided in consultation with the paddock teams, should offer drivers greater flexibility. They will now be able to focus more on finding the specification best suited to their riding style.
While the majority of events will adopt this new allocation, five Grand Prix host circuits will retain the current allocation due to particularly variable weather conditions: Le Mans (France), Silverstone (Great Britain), Sachsenring (Germany), Phillip Island (Australia) and Valencia (Spain). On these circuits, Michelin will maintain three front tire specifications, with five units per model.
This announcement is part of a global policy to limit the production and transport of tires. “With this new rationalization of front tire allocation, we are continuing work that began in 2018,” confides Piero Taramasso, Michelin's 2-Wheel competition manager. Over the past eight seasons, Michelin has halved the number of tire specifications offered to drivers, while continuously improving safety and performance on an increasing number of circuits, as evidenced by the numerous records set.
“Thanks to this continuous optimization approach, Michelin has progressively reduced the volumes of tires manufactured and transported. We are thus reaffirming our commitment to reconciling technological innovation, environmental responsibility and sporting excellence, serving MotoGP and all its stakeholders.” concluded the Italian engineer.
For comparison, the 2018 season had 58 different front and rear tire specifications for 19 Grands Prix, compared to 29 specifications in 2026, with a calendar of 22 races.
