This is a significant step forward for the brand, whose future in competition was in doubt less than a year ago. The financial crisis KTM faced at the end of 2024 seems to be a thing of the past, judging by the progress the factory has made towards its future.
Last October, the team announced that it had taken an important step in its commitment to the world championship, with the first bench test of the 850cc engine, designed according to the future technical regulations of 2027. At the beginning of December, another major step has just been taken.
At the Jerez circuit, which hosts the Spanish Grand Prix every year MotoGPPol Espargaro inaugurated the Mattighofen 850cc prototype on the track. "Do you hear that? The future has just begun. Our 850cc is alive and well, and it's ready to race in 2027," the brand announced on its social media.

As a reminder, the regulations planned for 2027 mandate a reduction in the maximum engine displacement. This will decrease from 1000cc to 850cc to limit speeds and make races safer. The maximum cylinder diameter will also be reduced, from 81mm to 75mm. The engine is designed to be 100% compatible with non-fossil fuels, as required by the specifications of these new regulations.
The early development of KTM's 2027 engine was made possible, in particular, by the agreement reached between the manufacturers on the grid to freeze engine development next year. Thus, those engines homologated by them in 2025 can no longer be modified – except in rare cases.
