Sixteen years ago, Marc Márquez became a Grand Prix winner.

On June 6, 2010, Marc Márquez won his first 125cc World Championship race at Mugello, kicking off an exceptional career.

It was June 6th. Fifteen years ago, when Moto16 was still called 3cc, a budding champion claimed his first world championship victory. On that day, at the Mugello circuit in Italy, Marc Marquez, riding a machine already bearing the number 125, edged out his compatriots Nicolas Terol and Pol Espargaró to claim his first-ever Grand Prix victory.

At the time, Marc Márquez was only 17 years old, but he was already turning heads in the paddock. After a thrilling race, the Derbi rider crossed the finish line as the winner, just 39 seconds ahead of his closest rival, and just one tenth ahead of Bradley Smith, who finished fourth in the race.

This first triumph in the 125cc class was just a taste of what Marc Márquez was about to achieve. This success paved the way for a series of five consecutive first-place finishes, which would extend all the way to the German Grand Prix. He was the first rider to accomplish such a feat since the incredible 1997 season of Valentino Rossi in the category.

He would climb to the top step of the podium five more times that year, clinching the 125cc world championship title. The first of the nine that make up his current record.

Fifteen years after that Sunday in Italy, on June 6, 2026, Marc Márquez is still an essential figure in the MotoGPHis record now stands at 99 Grand Prix victories. His next win would therefore allow him to reach a milestone that only Valentino Rossi (115) and Giacomo Agostini (122) have achieved before him.
