After several weeks of reflection and negotiations, Tech3 has finally decided: the French team will continue its adventure with KTM until 2027. Despite concrete interest from other brands, the structure created by Hervé Poncharal, now taken over by Günther Steiner, has chosen continuity.
"In motorsport, the strongest partnerships are often those that are already very well known," confides Guenther Steiner. With KTM and Tech3, we're not starting from scratch. Thanks to all the work done by Hervé Poncharal and the team over the past few years, we have a solid foundation with KTM, and that gives us a real advantage as we approach a new regulatory era. For both parties, it's about building on what already works. This continuity puts us in the best possible position to adapt quickly and remain competitive when the new rules come into effect.
Before extending their partnership with KTM, Tech3 explored an alternative, taking an interest in Honda's RC213v. As the new era approached... MotoGP With the arrival of 2027 and the introduction of 850cc engines, and under the leadership of its new CEO Günther Steiner, discussions began with the Japanese manufacturer, eager to add a second satellite team to its MotoGP roster. While a clear preference for KTM emerged, the final decision remained uncertain for a long time.
Nearly 10 years of collaboration
After two decades alongside Yamaha, Tech3 announced in 2018 its move to KTM, starting with the 2019 season. The French team then became the Austrian manufacturer's satellite team in MotoGP, supporting the rise of the KTM project in MotoGP and serving as a springboard for young riders. From the outset of this collaboration, Tech3 took a significant step forward, securing its first MotoGP victories with Miguel Oliveira. The first came at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix, KTM's home race, followed by a second in Portugal, where the rider competed in front of his home crowd.
In 2023, the links between the two structures strengthened with the arrival of GasGas, KTM's sister brand, which became Tech3's title sponsor in MotoGP. Two years later, the synergies between Tech3 and KTM were further reinforced, and the French team was renamed Red Bull KTM Tech3, while equipping itself with factory machines and new riders, with Enea Bastianini and Maverick Viñales.
Since then, Tech3 has changed ownership, with Guenther Steiner – at the head of an investment group – acquiring Hervé Poncharal's team. Under this new management, the team has already secured a podium finish in the Sprint Cup, at the United States Grand Prix. As the 2027 season approaches, this continuation of the partnership seemed a natural choice for the former boss of Haas en Formula 1.
