The circuit that hosted the suspenseful final between Jorge Martin and Pecco Bagnaia last November will keep its place on the calendar for a few more years. MotoGP and the Barcelona-Catalonia route, have just announced a contract extension that runs until 2031.
Since its debut in 1992, the circuit has become a mainstay of the calendar, hosting 34 Grands Prix to date, and becoming the third circuit on the calendar to have hosted MotoGP for the most consecutive seasons.
"We are very pleased to conclude this new agreement with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya," said Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports. They never fail to deliver a world-class weekend for the fans. We always have impressive attendance figures, and the circuit is so well connected to Barcelona. One of the most culturally important cities in the world. It’s a winning combination for us and we’re very excited to continue racing there.”
Last year, two races were held in Barcelona. The first of them, called the Catalan GP, attracted nearly 200 spectators to the site (000 to be exact), and entered the top-176 of the most attended events of the season.
The second race in Barcelona, this time called the Grand Prix of Solidarity, raised more than a million euros to help the victims of the floods in Valencia.
“Securing the MotoGP Grand Prix until 2031 is excellent news for Catalonia’s reputation as a host of top international sporting events, adds the president of the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit, Miquel Sàmper. In an increasingly internationalised and competitive environment, Catalonia's ability to maintain a circuit in such a stable manner is an achievement of which we can be proud."
This season, the MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix will be held in September. It will be the 15th round of the season, just after the return of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
