With a 24-point lead over Francesco Bagnaia, the situation is simple for Jorge Martin. The Spanish driver will become world champion if he manages to score two more points than his Italian rival, the two-time defending champion, this Saturday. If Bagnaia manages to stay within 25 points or less at the end of this Saturday's contest, the title will be decided at the last Grand Prix of the season, Sunday in Barcelona.

The Catalan circuit hosts the final of the MotoGP, which has been moved from Valencia. The Ricardo Tormo Circuit cannot host this final event following the devastating floods that hit the region in early November, which claimed the lives of more than 200 people. Dorna, the company that exploits the commercial rights to MotoGP, has therefore turned this relief meeting in Barcelona into a Solidarity Grand Prix, with proceeds going to reconstruction efforts and assistance for flood victims.
