How can Jorge Martin become champion in the Sprint in Barcelona?

Jorge Martin will tackle the final of the World Championship MotoGP with a nice advantage. While he had a 17-point lead over his rival Pecco Bagnaia before the last round in Malaysia, the Spaniard took advantage of the latter's fall in the Sprint to regain valuable points in the championship. He will therefore arrive in Barcelona with 24 points more than his rival.

This means that the Pramac rider will have two match points to close the race for the title, and become world champion in Catalonia. The first in the Sprint, and the second the following day, in the main race, if he has not yet achieved it.

To lift the champion's trophy on Saturday, Martin will have to score two more points than Bagnaia at the end of the Sprint. He would thus have a 26-point lead over his opponent, who could no longer hope to close the gap, while only 25 are at stake on Sunday.

As a reminder, Jorge Martin will not be able to settle for a tie in the championship, and absolutely must finish the season with more points than Bagnaia. This scenario would indeed see the Italian pocket the title, the latter having the advantage of the greatest number of victories, namely 10 against 3 after 19 meetings. If he starts the main race with a 25-point lead over the number 1, Martin could therefore still lose everything.

In this way, the following table groups together the different scenarios that would see Jorge Martín win his first title in the premier category on Saturday, November 16.

As a reminder, points are awarded to the first nine in Sprint races, according to the following distribution: 1st (12 pts), 2nd (9 pts), 3rd (7 pts), 4th (6 pts), 5th (5 pts), 6th (4 pts), 7th (3 pts), 8th (2 pts), 9th (1 point).

The results that would give Martin the title at the end of the Barcelona Sprint:

George Martin  Pecco Bagnaia
Whatever
2e  3rd or worse
3e 5rd or worse
4e 6rd or worse
5e 7rd or worse
6e 8rd or worse
7e 9rd or worse
8e 10rd or worse

Beyond an eighth place for Jorge Martín, the title will be decided in the last event of the season, namely the Main Race on Sunday.

It's time to change the way the title is awarded: 20 wins outweigh 3!!!
