Jorge Martin has no more time to lose. Victim of a heavy and impressive fall on the first day pre-season testing of the MotoGP In Malaysia on Wednesday, the reigning world champion was quickly hospitalized and operated on at the Quirón Dexeus clinic in Barcelona, after an express return to Europe. The operation on Jorge Martin's right hand, led by Dr. Xavier Mir, was successful, the clinic's medical team confirmed.

The Spanish rider, who suffered a major high-side on the first day of testing in Sepang, suffered a closed fracture of the 5th metacarpal head of his right hand and a closed fracture of the 3rd, 4th and 5th metatarsals of his left foot. Aprilia announced that the fractures of the left foot did not require surgery, and that the recovery time will be assessed in the coming days. "Jorge Martín underwent surgery for a displaced fracture of the head of the fifth right metacarpal, with reduction and percutaneous fixation using an intramedullary screw. Functional recovery will begin in a short time, depending on the clinical condition.", explained Dr. Xavier Mir.

Aprilia does not agree with Michelin

"I am pleased that Jorge's operation went well and we now hope that he will recover quickly, his health being the priority", confides Massimo Rivola. The president of Aprilia Racing, although relieved, strongly criticized Michelin's explanations regarding the fall of its star rider. According to the French manufacturer, Jorge Martin's accident was the consequence of a temperature too low in the inner part of the tire... something that Aprilia categorically denies.

"As regards the accident, I would like to clarify that our data in no way confirms Piero Taramasso's statements. (boss of Michelin's two-wheel competition, Editor's note). I believe that the safety of the riders must be the priority and I have already suggested to him to organise a meeting with all the teams in order to deal constructively with what is clearly a critical situation, as evidenced by the number of injuries., says Massimo Rivola.

For his part, Jorge Martin can now begin his convalescence period. The new Aprilia rider shared his health status on social media and tried to offer an explanation for his high-side, without really succeeding. “I don’t know what happened. It’s a shame because it was my first run on new tyres and we didn’t have the chance to work much. But I know Marco [Bezzecchi] is doing a great job and I’m sure we’ll find a way to be fast.”

The length of his recovery is not yet known, but the world champion will miss the pre-season tests in Buriram (February 12-13), to concentrate on a return at the first Grand Prix of the season, in Thailand (March 2).
