Aleix Espargaró, recently retired from the MotoGP, launched a video podcast on his YouTube channel, and for the first episode, he chose a special guest: Jorge Martín. A close friend and Espargaró's replacement at Aprilia, Jorge Martín had the opportunity to talk about the new challenges he is about to take on at Aprilia, but also about a tumultuous pre-season, which has not been easy on the injury front.
This is where Jorge Martín began, discussing his state of mind in the face of recent events. As a reminder, he will miss the first three rounds of the season, attempting a return to competition in April in Qatar.
"I'm doing well despite everything, but this is clearly not my best period, he confided, in comments relayed by the newspaper Marca. Coming from so high makes the fall even more brutal. Not long ago, I was at the top, and now I'm injured. But that's part of the sport, and I'm doing my best to move forward."
This isn't the only crash that has marked his career, and Jorge Martín has already suffered a major accident during a MotoGP preseason. However, the crash he regrets most came much earlier in his career. He mentions a significant accident at the Sachsenring in 2017, in Moto3. "I regret that fall, which still prevents me from doing certain things today. But it taught me a lot and led me to become world champion. I wouldn't change a thing."
A title with Aprilia
Among the highlights of his career, Jorge remembers his first meeting with Valentino Rossi in 2006 in Valencia, and races that he then competed against the Doctor, then at the end of his career.
“I was eight years old. He touched my head for a photo, and I didn’t wash my hair for a week,” he jokes. “Racing against him in his last season in MotoGP was an honor.”
Finally, Jorge Martín shared his determination for his future at Aprilia after missing out on a place at Ducati in the official team. "I'm convinced I'll win with this bike. My goal is to make Aprilia a world champion brand." he concludes enthusiastically.
