Thailand – Race: Bagnaia dances in the rain, Zarco scores big points

Bagnaia Winner in Thailand - Michelin

  • Even before the start of the race MotoGP In Thailand, rain decided to spice things up in Buriram. The Moto2 race was interrupted due to critical track conditions, and the race was declared rainy during the grid lap for the premier class players.
  • At the start, the track is wet, but the sky seems clear. In any case, the drivers set off on rain tires. Jorge Martin made an excellent start, and took the holeshot. Bagnaia tried to retaliate, and the two men took all the risks when braking for turn 4. A duel from which Martin emerged victorious, to continue the race in the lead.
  • fabio quartararo was second after the first corner, but the acceleration of his Yamaha did not allow him to maintain this advantage in the first long straight of the circuit. The Frenchman, however, kept fourth place, battling with the KTMs. His race was however spoiled by an overly optimistic attempt by Franco Morbidelli who sent him to the mat after five laps. The Italian would be penalized with a Long Lap before falling.

  • As Jorge Martin stabilises a five-tenths gap to Bagnaia, Marc Marquez begins to put the pressure on the reigning world champion. The Pramac rider cracks under the pressure, however, and goes straight on at Turn 1, before returning to the track in the wake of Marquez, in third position.
  • Bagnaia's future teammate comes back to the latter, and tries the lap for the lap against Bagnaia, who can't risk everything either. The Spaniard tries the inside twice under braking, but Bagnaia resists by regaining the best under acceleration. Before launching a third attack on the leader, the n°93 unfortunately falls. The race then takes a completely different turn, and becomes less intense at the front.

KTMs put on a show

  • Pecco Bagnaia has a three-second lead over Jorge Martin, while three KTMs come back at high speed in his exhausts, led by a Jack Miller with an impressive pace. Behind the Australian, Acosta and Binder engage in an intense duel, from which the rookie emerges victorious.
  • The Tech3 rider then closes in on Jack Miller, who is defending a first podium this season, perhaps his last with KTM. Side by side in many corners on lap 25, Pedro Acosta goes around the outside of Miller in three consecutive corners to take provisional third place. Miller will then lose fourth position to Fabio Di Giannantonio, on an excellent pace at the end of the race, for his last of the season.

  • The top five finally reached the finish in that order. Pecco Bagnaia won the MotoGP race in Thailand, taking his ninth victory in eighteen Grands Prix, and coming back to within 5 points of Jorge Martin. Pedro Acosta returned to the podium after four consecutive retirements.
  • Back in the fight for points, Marc Marquez disputes a few points with his former colours. He finally finishes the event in 11th place.
  • Johann Zarco, always in good shape in these conditions, finished the event in eighth place after defeating tough opponents, equipped with more powerful bikes than his Honda.
  • The weather conditions led to numerous crashes at the start of the race. Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez were the first to suffer. Enea Bastianini would follow suit a few moments later. Lorenzo Savadori suffered two crashes in turns 7 and 8, in the second half of the race. At the end of the race, it was Alex Rins and Augusto Fernandez who made mistakes.
  • With the two leaders, Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio, fourth and tenth, are the only other Ducati to finish in a top-10 which also includes three KTMs, two Aprilias and a Honda.
