Death of Louis Schweitzer, former CEO of Renault

Louis Schweitzer, former president and CEO of RenaultHe passed away this Friday at the age of 83. A major figure in the French automotive industry, he profoundly influenced the Renault group through his strategic vision and boldness. He joined Renault In 1986, after a stint in Laurent Fabius's office at Matignon, Schweitzer took the helm of the manufacturer in 1992, succeeding Raymond Lévy. During his thirteen-year tenure, he orchestrated the transformation of a company still marked by its past as a public enterprise into a global player fully integrated into international capitalism.

Under his leadership, Renault underwent a profound industrial and cultural transformation. He was the one who approved the acquisition of Dacia, a bold move since the Romanian brand was then unknown to the general European public, and made it a pillar of the group. He also launched the alliance with Nissan, sealed in 1999—a historic turning point for the European automotive industry. A visionary, Louis Schweitzer also understood the importance of a sporty image to strengthen the brand's identity. In 2000, he decided on Renault's return to... Formula 1, through the acquisition of the Benetton team. This decision will give birth, two years later, to Renault F1 Team, a symbol of technological renewal and French pride in motorsport.

Under his leadership, the team laid the foundations for future successes. Fernando Alonsoculminating in the 2005 and 2006 world titles for the Spaniard and two Constructors' championships. A discreet but determined man, Louis Schweitzer will be remembered as the one who brought Renault back to the top, both on the road and on the F1 circuits.

On its social media, the team Alpine F1 Team issued a statement in the form of a tribute by Flavio Briatore.

“Louis was at the helm of Renault when I arrived in F1. He was a man I deeply admired, both personally and professionally. I had the privilege of sharing unforgettable memories with him, both on and off the track. He was an inspiring and visionary leader in the automotive industry, as well as a motorsport enthusiast and a passionate supporter of Formula 1. Louis embodied the competitiveness and winning mentality of a champion in motorsport. He brought these qualities to his everyday life. He will be greatly missed.”
