Before the weekend begins, the drivers are warned. While it's not comparable to Monaco, Baku is a tricky circuit, twisting in places, and prone to mistakes if they get lost. In this case, a poorly negotiated braking point or a slight lapse in concentration can be costly in Azerbaijan.
The first person to wave the red flag during Friday's qualifying session, Amaury Cordeel (Rodin), saw his best time symbolically erased after the incident, and will therefore start 22nd on the grid. While the penalty doesn't change his starting position in the Belgian's case, the punishment does become more severe for Victor Martins and Roman Stanek.
Martins in the second half of the table
With just minutes left in qualifying, Victor Martins (ART GP) looked set to take fourth place on the grid for the main race, at the very least. However, as he was about to take his flying lap after Amaury Cordeel's accident, the Frenchman locked his tires due to excessive speed in Turn 2, causing him to end his race in the wall on the outside.
For Victor Martins, the penalty is the same, but it is intended to be much harsher in terms of consequences. From fourth position, the driver supported by Williams is relegated to 13th place, and will have to fight again in the peloton, despite a configuration of the place not conducive to fantastic comebacks. For his part, Roman Stanek (Invicta), author of a return to the track which was far too dangerous on John Bennett (VAR), the accident being the origin of unfortunately spectacular images, will have to start from 12th place in the race.
From this Saturday, the sprint race will be available to follow from 12:05 p.m. (French time) to find out the first part of the unfolding of events. Formula 2 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
