Mattia Colnaghi, Eurocup-3 champion, who is the future Formula 3 driver?

At the heart of a grid of drivers with very diverse experience, Mattia Colnaghi emerged. Joining MP Motorsport, the team with which he started the car In 2024, the Italian-Argentinian managed to pull off a strong performance, despite the fact that he was new to the category this year. Spanish F4 champion last year, and now Eurocup-3 champion in 2025, the driver is particularly ahead of the curve, and has quickly taken off in the general classification this season.

In sixteen races held since the start of the current season, spread over seven separate events, Mattia Colnaghi has impressed, winning five times. With one round remaining in the third Eurocup-3 season, the new champion left little room for his rivals, taking ten podiums in total. Paradoxically, his overall performance was punctuated by only two pole positions. In a series where overtaking is not always easy due to the technical specifications of the single-seaters, such a record remains particularly notable.

Can Colnaghi continue?

Having been on the top step of the podium since the first race of the 2025 season in Spielberg, Austria, he then went on to win at Paul Ricard, Monza, Assen and finally Jerez, totalling 256 points at this stage. With a 71-point lead over his teammate, the Italian Valerio Rinicella, the future driver of Formula 3 can now begin to anticipate the future.

While FRECA has historically remained the clearest path to Formula 3 – Freddie Slater and Matteo De Palo, the two leaders of the European Regional Formula, both having been confirmed at Trident next year – the increasing number of promotions from Eurocup-3 will allow us to measure the still difficult to grasp gap in level between the two categories. Frankly dominant, Mattia Colnaghi will in any case be faced with the challenge of continuing his perfect run after only two seasons in single-seaters. Up against the benchmarks of FRECA, but also against the drivers already present on the F3 grid this season, like the Frenchman Alessandro Giusti, already confirmed with MP Motorsport for 2026, the Italian stands out as a potential symbol of a new, credible path in the single-seater pyramid.
