Without this penalty received by Chloe Chambers (Campos Racing), the F1 Academy could have witnessed a winless weekend for the two championship favorites. Leading almost from start to finish, the American found herself battling Maya Weug (MP Motorsport) early in the race.
In this bitter duel, the two drivers traded blows. After managing to overtake Dorian Pin (Prema) from the first bend at the start, the driver supported by the sector Ferrari got the better of Chambers at the start of the third lap. Back in the duel, the polewoman was deemed at fault for pushing her rival to the outside to regain the lead.
A second-place finish in the race following this battle that went beyond the limits of the track, Doriane Pin lost the championship lead at the end of this weekend. 4th yesterday, the driver supported by Mercedes took third place this Sunday. Although a better result was possible due to Chambers' penalty, the American managed to create a gap of more than five seconds with the Frenchwoman, securing her position by 3 thousandths of a second.
Behind a leading trio that was difficult to catch, Alisha Palmowski (Campos Racing) was never far from Doriane Pin in front of her. Supported by Red Bull, she is thus not dropped in the championship despite a lack of opportunities this Sunday. At the end of this weekend, Maya Weug however takes a seven-point lead over her main rival, Doriane Pin, now 2nd.
The 18 F1 Academy drivers will meet for the next round in Miami, from May 2 to 4.
