Surprise at the Mexico E-Prix 2026. Sébastien Buemi inherits pole position after Taylor Barnard's time was cancelled for exceeding track limits in the final, in a thrilling qualifying session marked by penalties and close battles at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Celebrations had already begun in the Penske garage, but the stewards quickly announced they were investigating a potential infringement on the final corner of the Briton's lap. The penalty was handed down moments later.
To reach the final, Barnard had first beaten Nico Müller (5th – Porsche) in the quarterfinals, before narrowly beating Mortara (3rd – Mahindra) in the semifinals. As for Buemi, he finished ahead of Oliver Rowland in the quarterfinals. The reigning champion qualified his Porsche in 8th place. He then easily beat Mitch Evans in the semifinals, the New Zealander blocking 4th place on the starting grid.
In the other two quarterfinals, Edoardo Mortara beat championship leader Jake Dennis (7th), while Evans beat Dan Ticktum, who ultimately qualified 7th.
Three drivers received grid penalties: Jean-Éric Vergne (three places), Lucas di Grassi (five places), and Pepe Martí, who will start from the back of the grid, for various infractions during practice. These penalties will benefit all those who qualified behind them.
